SPEAKER: Larry Purnell, RN, PhD, FAAN
TOPIC: Cultrual Diversity and Competence: A Global Perspective
Larry received his BSN from Kent State (Kent, OH) in 1973, a MSN in 1977 from Rush University (Chicago, IL), and a PhD in Health Services Administration from Columbia Pacific University (San Rafael, California). He has published over 100 refereed journal articles, more than 150 book chapters, and 14 books. The first edition of his award winning book, Transcultural healthcare: A Culturally Competent Approach, has been translated into Spanish, French, Flemish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, German, Arabic, and Korean. An invited speaker in 15 countries on 4 continents, Dr. Purnell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a Luther Christman Fellow. In July of 2003, he was inducted into the Rosa Parks Hall of Fame Wall of Teaching Tolerance in Montgomery, AL. In addition, Dr. Purnell has served as the U.S. Representative to the European Union Commission on Intercultural Communication resulting from the Salamanca, Sorbonne, Bologna, and World Health Organization (WHO) Declarations. With more 45 years of nursing administration, teaching, and clinical experience, Dr. Purnell is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Delaware.
