The Frank M. Norfleet Forum for the Advancement of Health 
“Addressing Our Pediatric Obesity Epidemic: Research to Health Policy”

 Childhood obesity is a major national and international public health problem with serious implications for the future wellness of our population. Affected children will become adults with a greatly increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases associated with significant morbidity and mortality that will severely burden our health care system. Obesity is especially prevalent in children in the Mid-South and Tennessee. A new collaborative initiative is under way in Memphis to address this critical problem through cutting-edge translational research supported by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University of Memphis, and the Memphis Research Consortium, a state-funded initiative to foster collaboration across our local academic institutions and community. This meeting, made possible by the Frank M. Norfleet Forum for the Advancement of Health Fund for the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, will allow obesity researchers, pediatric health care providers and stakeholders to interact with leading experts in pediatric obesity.

Objectives

1. Describe the metabolic abnormalities and morbidities associated with obesity in children and their relationship to nutrition, including excessive sugar intake, genetics and inflammation in the setting of the metabolic syndrome.


2. Identify evidence-based treatment strategies for childhood obesity, including behavioral and community-based interventions.


3. Outline the economic consequences of pediatric obesity and the impact on health policy.


4. Identify strategies to modify health policy to address the obesity epidemic with a focus on prevention and intervention in children.


5. Provide opportunity for local researchers, clinicians and community stakeholders in pediatric obesity to interact with national experts in the field in structured panel and small group settings.

Target Audience

This course is designed for pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment and prevention of obesity and its complications in children, as well as basic and translational researchers, community partners and other stakeholders.
